While smoking combustible cigarettes are bad for everyone, they’re especially risky to those who have been diagnosed with diabetes. Diabetes is a relatively common health disorder that results from the body’s inability to metabolize sugar. Essentially this means that diabetics need to find the balance by maintaining their sugar levels through the use of insulin shots or medication. It’s recommended that people take preventive steps to control their disease and one of those steps is to quit smoking.

Can nicotine raise your blood sugar levels?

We hate to say it, but when it comes to high sugar levels nicotine is the main culprit who’s responsible. This is because when you inhale nicotine from your combustible cigarette, you’re coating your hemoglobin — a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen — with sugar. After all, the more cigarettes you smoke, the higher your blood sugar level rises.

What happens if you continue to smoke as a diabetic?

People who continue to smoke combustible cigarettes are more likely to develop serious health problems and complications such as:

  • High risk of heart and kidney disease.
  • The lack of blood flow can cause infections that lead to ulcers and possible amputation.
  • Retinopathy (an eye disease that causes blindness).
  • Peripheral neuropathy (damaged nerves causing numbness and pain).

How does vaping compare?

It’s an amazing achievement if you’re someone who has the willpower to quit combustible cigarettes cold turkey, but for those who struggle, an e-cig starter kit is the perfect little tool to help lower your nicotine levels over time. Vaping gives ex-smokers the power to choose their nicotine concentration levels so that they’re able to select an e-liquid that meets their needs while gradually reducing their nicotine intake. This means that eventually, they will be able to vape an e-cig starter kit that doesn’t contain nicotine, which is incredibly beneficial for diabetics. Also, another tip would be to select flavors that contain moderate amounts of VG, as this compound is known for its sweet qualities.
