Many of us who vape do so partly because using e-cigs is considerably less harmful to our health when compared to smoking combustible cigarettes. But what about the impact of vaping on our furry companions? How can we keep them safe while we transition to e-cigarettes?

What makes e-cigarettes dangerous to pets?

We all know that pets are incredibly curious creatures. Since they love to follow their scent, e-liquids can be especially alluring to them. Unfortunately, even the lowest concentration of nicotine, 1.2% or 12mg can pose serious health risks to a cat or a dog if ingested, and higher doses can be lethal. The toxic dose for animals vary according to their weight, but for a dog, it is estimated to be 9.2 mg/kg, so if a larger dog swallows nicotine-containing e-juice, it may show signs of nicotine poisoning while a smaller dog risks losing its life.

How to detect pet nicotine poisoning?

Since our beloved pets cannot vocally communicate their symptoms to us, it is crucial to recognize the signs of nicotine poisoning. Other than the telltale chewed cartridges or broken-into e-juice bottles, watch for vomiting, diarrhea, increased heart rate, accelerated breathing, agitation, weakness, lethargy, and seizures. If you notice your pets exhibiting any of these symptoms, you need to take action immediately since nicotine poisoning manifests itself within 15 to 60 minutes of ingestion, and its effects can result in the rapid deterioration of your pet’s health.

Other health concerns

Oral Injuries: While it’s the nicotine in the e-juice that makes e-cigarettes dangerous to animals, they can also injure themselves while chewing on the cartridges and bottles and can even risk choking.

PG Sensitivity: Since cats are especially sensitive to PG, exposure to the chemical may result in allergic reactions. In fact, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has deemed it unsafe for use in or on cat food.

What can you do to protect your pets?

Keep your e-juice and vaping equipment out of their reach: Get into the habit of storing all your vaping gear in a safe place your pets cannot access. While the e-juice cartridges and bottles are the most dangerous, you also don’t want your pets licking any remnants of the liquid off your devices. When vaping, be cognizant of your pet’s presence, and make sure to keep any cartridges or open bottles on you, rather than on a table where they can sneakily reach them.

Use VG only e-juice for extra precaution around your cat: If you’re especially concerned about PG sensitivity, exercise caution when vaping e-juice that contains the substance around your cat. If you want to take it a step further, opt for our specialty, VG-only e-juices.

Don’t blow vapor in your pet’s face: Ensure that the room you’re vaping in is properly ventilated, and refrain from blowing vapor in your pet’s face. In general, it’s good practice to vape away from your furry companions.
